Honoring the Life and Legacy of Louis Stokes: Champion

Former Congressman Louis Stokes passed on August 18, 2015

In memory of Louis Stokes: February 23, 1925 - August 18, 2015

The LSAMP programs at the National Science Foundation are named after former Congressman Louis Stokes. Louis Stokes passed away this week. UMBC is part of two LSAMP programs for the University System of Maryland: the LSAMP program for undergraduate students (part of the Meyerhoff Scholors program) with the University of Maryland College Park and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and the LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate program with College Park.

NSF Program Director for LSAMP, Dr. Tasha Inniss shared these words:

Dear LSAMP Community:

I am sure many of you have already heard about the great loss we have all experienced with the passing of Congressman Louis Stokes on Tuesday, August 18th. He was a true champion of students of color in STEM. This is the reason why the national Alliances for Minority Participation program was renamed in his honor in 1999, the year he retired from Congress. The legacy of his tremendous impact will be long-lasting. Here is one of the stories featuring him in the USA Today:
