LSAMP BD Fellows - Apply for the Summer Dissertation House

@UMBC, Tues. July 10 - Fri. July 13, 2018, Commons 329

Dear LSAMP BDs, past and present,

This information was sent to graduate students at UMBC. As LSAMP BD Fellows, you are expected to participate in this activity, co-sponsored by the PROMISE AGEP. The photo shows some of our LSAMP BD Fellows, including Hervens Jeannis (now Dr. Jeannis) who was a UMBC BD and went to Pitt for his PhD. He came back to UMBC for the Dissertation House whenever he could. He finished his PhD this semester, and was offered a job during the 2018 NSBE conference.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In an effort to support graduate students with degree completion, UMBC sponsors "The Dissertation House," a 4-day "actual working" workshop that allows students time to work on dissertations, includes daily blogging for accountability, and provides valuable coaching.

The application period is open: https://my.umbc.edu/groups/promise/events/59221

The application period is typically 2 weeks, but this semester, it has been extended. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and while the deadline is June 15, please note that slots may be filled before that date.

Priority goes to applicants who are PhD candidates working on dissertations. However, space permitting, we have occasionally allowed students to use the Dissertation House (DH) to complete the following milestones:
  • IRB application
  • Master's thesis
  • Manuscript for publication, or revisions
  • Preparation of presentation for defense
  • Dissertation revisions
  • Preparation for slides for job talk
  • Grant or fellowship application
Students who are accepted must commit to participating in the DH for the 9-5 sessions, for each of the four days, Tuesday, July 10 - Friday, July 13.  Exception: Students may be excused during the DH for short periods for meetings with their faculty. Students are strongly encouraged to have consultations with their advisors and committee members prior to the DH, and afterward, to facilitate plans of action that are in line with faculty's expectations.

The Dissertation House has been running since 2007, and has more than 100 PhD alumni. Versions of our Dissertation House have been held at UMBC, College Park, UMB, Carnegie Mellon, and the University of Puerto Rico. Our DH has been replicated by several schools, e.g. Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University.

Read more on our articles page. We have had articles and mentions in the CBE-Life Sciences Education journal, UMBC's magazine, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and more! In March 2018, the DH was mentioned as a signature program during a conference plenary at Berkeley.

The Dissertation House is a product of PROMISE: Maryland's AGEP (sponsored by the National Science Foundation), and advice from coach, Dr. Wendy Carter-Veale. The DH is supported by The Graduate School at UMBC.

The application is short, and won't take much time to complete. Your dissertations will be long enough. We try to make this part easy. Please apply soon.

Best regards,
Renetta Tull
